Most startups have been able to trace their journeys back to board meetings, market reports, or with their fellow investors as their batchmates. The journey of Shiprazor founder Sahil Affriya was quite unique: he came up with his idea on a road trip in South Africa. It started as a road trip, but it eventually transformed into something far-reaching and valuable. He started reminiscing on his expertise in the field of e-commerce and consumer behaviour in India and decided to replicate the logistics model in South Africa. His knowledge of digital infrastructure and consumer behaviour could prove to be invaluable in his new venture. The e-commerce business in South Africa had begun to witness a surge, and he decided to make the most out of this opportunity.
From a Road Trip to a Logistics Revolution: How Sahil Affriya Is Building Shiprazor, the Infrastructure Behind South Africa’s E-Commerce Growth
Although he was convinced about his idea, he still had to keep the potential challenges into consideration. The logistics infrastructure was lagging. The courier networks were operating in a fragmented manner, and consumers’ tracking experiences were inefficient. As a result, the retailers were finding it hard to scale their operations, and logistics were becoming a major hindrance.
Sahil thought the same model In India could be replicated in South Africa. The e-commerce transformation that had been achieved in India could be possible in South Africa as well. If he could manage his way around the infrastructure, he could easily transform the e-commerce market in developed cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg. Shiprazor emerged as a promising solution to the logistical challenges in South Africa. It is a tech-based fulfilment platform which was created to simplify logistics operations and enable large-scale growth in terms of e-commerce in South Africa.
Coming Together of Two Different Mindsets
The coming together of this particular idea was shaped by several influences. He had grown up in a family which was connected to the Indian Armed Forces. Therefore, his mindset and lifestyle had automatically included discipline and structure. He also had exposure to the entrepreneurial side of his family, which brought qualities like commercial decision-making and business thinking. As a result, he possessed both a commercial discipline and a desire to solve the most complicated market problems. This particular skill helped him start his entrepreneurial journey.
Sahil had been an academic scholar, and he also had a sharp business mind. He completed his B.Tech degree from Jaypee Institute of Technology, followed by an M.Tech Degree from BITS Pilani. He also completed his MBA later from the Cape Town Graduate School of Business. However, Shipazor wasn’t his pilot project. He had earlier developed MechanicKart, an automotive supply platform designed to connect manufacturers directly with mechanics. This project had served as a learning experience for Sahil.
He had continuously worked in the supply chain, which had taught him an invaluable lesson: whenever operational inefficiencies occur, they are bound to limit the growth of an organisation. If a business wants to successfully scale its operations, it must tactfully deal with the bottlenecks, disconnected systems, and fragmented processes in terms of the logistics network.
Sahil’s Journey As An Investor & A Founder
Sahil had completed his MBA degree from Cape Town, which had built his affinity towards South Africa. Apart from excelling in his academic journey, Sahil had also shown a keen interest in entrepreneurial ventures. He had started building strong relations with the local investors, operators, and entrepreneurs. He had used his on-field experience to understand how the companies were operating within the market setup.
After graduation, he joined the Savant Venture Fund. Subsequently, he progressed from being an intern to a principal between 2021 and 2023. This experience helped him shape his point of view. It also allowed him to get a closer look at other businesses operating in South Africa.
He was able to identify the startups which had scaled most successfully and which operational models helped create resilience. He was also able to gauge the loopholes which were causing a hindrance to growth for some startups. According to his observation, the growth of a company was not solely limited to the customer experience. It was also dependent upon the execution infrastructure. Logistics had continued to be a persistent problem for all companies alike.
Solving The Logistics Problem
Consumers have also considered e-commerce to be a fairly simple process. They fail to realise the complexities which are involved in the delivery of every successful order. With the integration of various sites like Shopify, WooCommerce, and Magento, this process becomes even more complex than ever. It involves various courier negotiations, tracking tools, delays in terms of fulfilment, and the changing nature of the shipping costs. The operational pressure is also bound to increase as the companies scale their operations. It results in the logistics becoming a more time-consuming process and less effort being allocated to revenue generation. Shiprazor emerged as an easy solution to tackle this problem.
It easily simplified the fulfilment operations and gave the retailers a unified system which could manage their shipments and courier selections, and help track the orders in real time. The retailers were no longer required to switch across multiple courier portals and dashboards. They could manage the whole delivery process with the help of a single dashboard.
Currently, Shiprazor has over 16 courier partners under a single domain, and it also supports deliveries across more than 35,000 postal codes. Shipping has now been enabled across 160 countries. Now, merchants have increased visibility across the entire shipping journey, and orders are synchronised in an automatic fashion. Even the store integrations are bound to happen in a rapid manner. Shiprazor has been more than just an operational upgrade. Now businesses can scale in an efficient manner without the need to rebuild their logistics system every time the order volume increases.
The Modern Infrastructure
Shipping aggregation has not been the sole purpose behind the initiation of Shiprazor. It has also served as an infrastructure layer for digital e-commerce. The retailers can compare the prices of various shipping rates, automate their shipping workflows, monitor their delivery performance, and manage their returns, all with a single platform. The system has now become more accessible than ever. The “Pay As You Ship” structure has enabled the retailers to onboard without subscription commitments and pay only when shipments are processed. Merchants are now able to embrace simplicity, and they are also able to gain access to the infrastructure which was usually available for larger projects.
Expanding The E-Commerce Market
Although the inception of Shiprazor has been in South Africa, it is not limited in its geographical approach. Sahil believes that the e-commerce opportunities between India and South Africa are immense. Both these countries have various common grounds which allow them to share this business model. They are home to a growing digital population who are switching to online shopping as an everyday practice. This has been the reason behind the expansion of various trade opportunities. Shiprazor stands as a promising solution to this problem.
It has made cross-border trade relatively easier, and the operational complexities now seem less overwhelming. In this way, the Indian businesses are able to reach the consumers in South Africa, and the products in South Africa are now being shipped to various countries across the globe. The credibility of Sahil’s approach can therefore be attributed to his experience rather than theoretical knowledge. He has been able to gain a thorough understanding of the limitations of infrastructure, the dynamics of the commercial system, and the regulatory authorities.
Market Opportunities for Both India and South Africa
South Africa is set to grow at an unprecedented rate in terms of its e-commerce. Logistics has become one of the deciding factors for customers to make a purchase. Companies are now required to deliver their products in the most efficient manner and also maintain absolute transparency across the entire supply chain. Customers will only make repeat purchases if they are satisfied with their delivery process. This has become one of the defining objectives of Shiprazor.
As South Africa’s digital economy continues to evolve, Shiprazor will be able to raise additional capital with the growth of investor confidence. A small observation during a passing road trip was able to evolve into something much larger and give businesses in South Africa the opportunity to grow beyond their means. Shiprazor is not simply a logistics tool; it is able to expand South Africa’s infrastructure and make use of every given opportunity. Along with packages, the vision of the company is also moving at a fast-paced rate.
