BambooIndia Yogesh Shinde

Yogesh Shinde’s journey from an Associate Vice President at Barclays in Europe to founding an eco-startup in rural India is a powerful reminder that purpose can eclipse profit. Deeply moved by the distress he saw in Indian farming communities — especially after losing a close farmer friend to suicide — Yogesh decided to step away from the comforts of corporate life in Germany and return to India with a simple yet bold mission: make a meaningful difference to farmers and the planet.

Together with his wife, Ashwini Shinde, he launched Bamboo India on August 15, 2016 — symbolically chosen as India’s Independence Day to signify freedom from plastic dependence. What began as a humble initiative to create value from an under-used natural resource soon blossomed into a mission-driven enterprise.

Bamboo India’s founders saw opportunity where others saw scarcity. India, despite being the world’s second-largest producer of bamboo, contributed less than 5 % to global exports. Yogesh and Ashwini decided to transform this abundant material into everyday sustainable alternatives — from bamboo toothbrushes and earbuds to corporate gifts.

Their early days weren’t easy. Without manufacturing facilities or prior entrepreneurial experience, they navigated supply chains, market education, and trust barriers with farmers. But persistence paid off. Today, Bamboo India partners with over 1,000 farmers, serves over 100,000 customers worldwide, and has eliminated millions of kilograms of plastic waste — all while growing consistently year on year.

Yogesh and Ashwini’s story exemplifies how founders can marry purpose and profitability to build ventures that don’t just generate revenue — but also create social and environmental impact. For every founder aiming to redefine norms, Bamboo India is living proof that meaningful entrepreneurship begins not just with a business plan, but with a purpose worth pursuing.
